Cassian followed behind Lia as they trailed through the woods, primas at their sides, in front of them, and behind.

Lia blindly reached an arm behind, her fingers attempting to intertwine with his.

“Fuck off!” he quietly hissed, smacking the offending hand. She tried to stifle her responding snort, but Cassian still heard it.

As the line slowed, he thought that they might be stopping, but a look ahead had him breathing lighter.

Weapons.

They were handing out weapons along the line.

Why would they even need them?

Cassian kept his stride even, trying not to shrink away as they moved closer to the weapons station.

As Lia passed, she looked down into the wooden barrel, her body language betraying nothing. Then she reached in, her eyes cast down, and pulled out a machete.

What the-

He sped up to reach her when a hand pushed at his shoulder. He turned, and there stood Sven.

He narrowed his eyes. “You left this.”

Cassian went to ask what he meant when he felt the cool metal against his arm.

An axe.

He’d passed the station without picking up a weapon.

“Thank you,” he said as evenly as he could, plucking it out of his grip.

Sven nodded, watching him closely, but Cassian pretended not to notice as he moved to Lia’s side.

“What are you doing?” he whispered.

Lia kept her face forward. “Fitting in. What are you doing?”

He almost stopped walking. “Li-”

Whatever Cassian was going to tell her evaporated as he looked out at the clearing that they approached.

There were houses.

Huts more like, but they were homes.

He wasn’t exactly sure what he was expecting, but for some reason, he imagined the humans in Patriam to be more…uncivilized, to live like animals, especially considering that they were hunted like animals.

But this was a small village.

Curtains were drawn, doors were closed, animals were locked away in their pens.

They had no idea what was coming to them.
